Ribble Valley Borough Council announces its VE Day events
Ribble Valley Borough Council has announced details of its events to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day on Thursday 8th May.
At 9am the council will raise the official VE Day flag at Clitheroe Castle to mark the start of the day-long celebrations.
In the evening the Mayor of Ribble Valley, Councillor Louise Edge, will host a beacon lighting ceremony at the castle at 9.30pm to coincide with similar beacons being lit across the country. The Mayor will read the VE Day Tribute of Remembrance, and Clitheroe Town Band and the choir from St Mary’s Church, Clitheroe, will provide a musical accompaniment.
Both events will be open to the public.
The Mayor said: “We’re delighted that people in Ribble Valley will be joining with others across the country to mark this momentous anniversary."
“There will be celebrations, just as there were when the war ended, but it’s also a time to remember the cost and sacrifice paid by those brave men and women, both in battle and at home, during that terrible conflict.”
Street parties and other events will be held across Ribble Valley as part of nationwide celebrations to remember the end of the Second World War in Europe.
The council provided grants of £500 to each parish and town council in the borough to help fund their own celebrations.
