Temporary Remembrance Day Flagpole at Clitheroe Castle

And the 12th Century castle keep is also to host its annual giant poppy projection.

The Clitheroe Castle Keep and flagpole were recently closed in preparation for a repointing project.

Independent heritage experts advised that the keep be closed to the public until the start of the works early next year.

This means there is now no access to the keep, or the castle’s curtain wall and flagpole.

But castle owners Ribble Valley Borough Council today said a temporary flagpole will be erected at the curtain wall in partnership with Clitheroe Town Council specifically to commemorate Remembrance Day.

Adam Allan, the council’s director of community services, said: “Remembrance Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the sacrifice of those who have served and continue to serve our country.

“Although the keep is closed, we wanted to ensure that a flag could be raised as part of the town’s Remembrance Day commemorations. 

“We have therefore arranged for a temporary flagpole to be erected on the curtain wall on Friday, 10 November, until Monday, 13 November.”

A giant poppy will also be projected onto the Castlegate side of the keep throughout Remembrance Week. 

Crowds and television crews gathered to watch the first poppy projection at Clitheroe Castle marking the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.

It was so spectacular that Ribble Valley Borough Council has made it an annual event marking Remembrance Day ever since.

The poppy will be visible for miles around, particularly to the North of Clitheroe, with the best vantage point from Castlegate in the town centre.
