Clitheroe Castle to Host Live Screening of King’s Coronation
The coronation of His Majesty King Charles III is to be screened live at Clitheroe Castle.
His Majesty will be crowned on the morning of 6 May, at a time to be confirmed, alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort, in a solemn 1,000-year-old ceremony at Westminster Abbey.
And people can watch the event live on a big screen at the Clitheroe Castle bandstand.
They can then take part in a raft of celebratory events, including street parties, called the Big Lunch, on 8 May, and helping their community, called the Big Help Out, on 9 May.
The iconic Clitheroe Castle will also be lit up red, white and blue during coronation weekend.
As well as organising the live screening, Ribble Valley Borough Council is waiving road closure charges for coronation street parties and dishing out £500 grants to parish councils to help them commemorate the event in any way they see fit.
The Big Help Out on 9 May is aimed at encouraging people to get involved in volunteering.
So the borough council is offering parish councils and community groups litter-picking sticks and refuse sacks to clean up their neighbourhoods, and will collect the sacks afterwards.
The last coronation in the UK was that of Queen Elizabeth II on 2 June, 1953, which was the first major world event to be broadcast internationally on television.
And Ribble Valley Council chief executive Marshal Scott said the coronation of King Charles promised be a bank holiday weekend like no other.
“The coronation is an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate a landmark event that will be broadcast around the world.
“Sharing friendship, food and fun gives people more than just a good time – they feel less lonely, make friends and become more involved with their community – while the Big Help Out will bring them together to create a volunteering legacy from the coronation.
“We invite our communities to celebrate the coronation in any way that feels right for them.”
Further information for parish councils on the £500 commemorative grants and for parish councils and community groups looking to book Big Help Out litter-pickers or refuse collections is available from Ribble Valley Borough Council on 01200 425111.
